Enterprise software development life cycle

“The most important single aspect of software development is to be clear about what you are trying to build”. -Bjarne Stroustrup

What is SDLC?

Software Development life cycle is expanded form of SDLC. SDLC is series of steps that provide a model for the development and lifecycle management of an application or software. The methodology of SDLC process can vary across organizations.

Benefits of SDLC

The aim of SDLC process is to develop product that is cost-effective and of high-quality. SDLC usually contains analysis, designing, development, testing and maintenance.

Phases of SDLC

1. Requirement analysis:

In this phase, business requirements are gathered and purpose of the software or system are determined.

2. Design:

In this phase, system and software design is prepared from requirement specification studied in first phase. It helps in specifying hardware and system requirements.

3. Development:

In this stage of SDLC, actual development starts. If design is performed in detail, then this stage can be accomplished easily. Developers have to follow the coding guidelines defined by organization.

In this phase, code produced during construction is tested using static and dynamic analysis. Products defects or bugs are reported, fixed, tracked and retested, until it reaches the quality standards defined.

Once product is ready to deploy, it is released in market. Sometimes product deployment happens in stages as per business strategy.

SDLC Implementation

There are various types of SDLC models which are followed during software development process, and these models are known as SDLC models. Most important SDLC models followed in industry are:

  • Waterfall Model
  • Iterative Model
  • Spiral Model
  • V-Model
  • Big Bang Model
