what is UBeacon and UWiFi? UBeacon, name for Apple’s technology standard, allows mobile apps to analyze signals from beacons and react accordingly. It also permits mobile apps to understand customer position and on this basis, it sends hyper-contextual content to users.

UBeacon uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication technology. BLE is a personal wireless area network technology to transmit data over short distances. As clear from name, it’s designed for low cost and minimal energy consumption, while maintaining a communication range. BLE communication contains small packets of data or “Advertisements” which are broadcast or sent at a regular interval by Beacons.

Now coming to UWiFi, UWiFi is a serial-to-WiFi device server that allows installed serial devices to connect with Internet via their existing serial port. It acts as a security gap between the network and host application. It supports up to 10 simultaneously active TCP/UDP sockets, provides one secure SSL3/TLS1 socket and two listening sockets. Apart from this, UWiFi eliminates the need of any hardware modifications to the host device.

What is IoT ? IoT is a concept which enables dumb devices such as car ignition systems, thermostats, etc. to communicate with other systems outside of those devices. These systems share information and gather information that the devices produce, which is then analyzed to take action. Suppose, motorbike shares and gathers data by using devices that are integrated into the core system of bike including fuel management, ignition and transmission. These devices store and produce data which helps to determine how well the bike is performing, examine forthcoming problems and take preventative actions.

In 36th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners,

representatives from academia and private sector discuss positive and negative impact of big data and IoT. The purpose was to establish principles on how to reduce the risks related to using data. The conclusion of this conference was captured in two documents namely, the Mauritius Declaration on the Internet of Things and the Mauritius Resolution on Big Data.

Mauritius Resolution on Big Data

  1. Collect and store data that is necessary for lawful purpose
  2. Enable individual to access data maintained by them, and correct and control that information
  3. When collecting data, define the purpose of collection
  4. Carefully control access to sensitive data

Mauritius Declaration on the IoT

  1. Individuals who have connected devices should know what data they collect, for what  purpose and how long it should be retained
  2. Data received from connected devices is “high in quality, quantity and sensitivity”, and should be treated as sensitive and personal data
